Night Light CDThe Miracle Mile (2006)

Track Listing
Rescue Us, Lancaster Bomber, Map of the Human Genome, In The Country, Southbound, Here For You, The Good Times Virus, High and Low, Statue of Los Angeles, Hollow, The Miracle Mile

Notes
Best known as a talented multi-instrumentalist in platinum-selling international pop heroes Barenaked Ladies, Toronto-based singer/songwriter Kevin Hearn has long pursued a parallel solo career path. Accompanied by his longtime band, Thinbuckle, he has followed his own musical muse down the miracle mile and beyond. Over the course of three earlier albums, Mothball Mint (1997), H-Wing (1998), and Night Light (2003), Hearn has operated underneath the commercial radar, but has earned a loyal international following with his highly original yet tuneful sound.

That audience seems destined to expand dramatically with his new tour de force (and Warner Music Canada debut),The Miracle Mile. Written during a stay in downtown Los Angeles (in an area dubbed The Miracle Mile), the album is a collection of songs that explore dreams and disappointments, love and loss. Kevin probes the human condition with both surgical skill and a deep, hard-earned sense of compassion. His perceptive insights are framed by gently seductive melodies and his sweet and subtle vocals.

Add songwriting collaborations with Ron Sexsmith and BNL comrade Steven Page, a haunting string arrangement from the legendary Van Dyke Parks (Beach Boys) on the title track, and crystalline production from Jim Scott (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Petty) and Michael Phillip Wojewoda (Barenaked Ladies), and you have a compelling piece of work. Miracle Mile is an album that demands and rewards your very close attention.

It never ends.
Ever since the caveman days, we've had mud flung into our faces. We've had our egos bruised, our backs stabbed and our hearts broken. Although we are undoubtedly changed and shaped by these experiences, most of us get up, put on a brave face and continue on our journey.

What is it that motivates us to keep going and not give up? For me, the joys that life has to offer are worth the effort.

When I started writing songs for this new album, my goal was to present a collection of songs, with no running concept or theme. My previous project, H WIng, had been a rather dark affair. I needed to do something a little lighter. Upon looking over the songs that ended up on Nightlight, I realize that they do have something in common. They all contain an element of reflection on a life experience, a little stroll through the rough part of the memory lane district. Whether it is a song about lost love or stolen musical instruments, the tone is of a sigh and then...'life goes on'. The title 'Nightlight' symbolizes the hope and guidance we draw on to help us through tough times.

We recorded this record in the fall of 2002 in Toronto... I drew the pictures that make up the CD booklet while working on the record. The band and I hope you enjoy it... take care,
Kevin Hearn.

H WING (the short story)
In the Spring of 1998, i wasn't feeling very well at all. For the last few months. I had been fighting off pains, losing my energy, appetite, and weight. The situation got worse. I was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia, a form of blood cancer. I had not planned on dying so soon. My life turned upside down. I was so shocked and overwhelmed by the news that i felt like i was floating. There was hope.

There had been great progress with this type of cancer, and there was a chance I may lead a normal life again. I had never heard of a "bone marrow transplant" before. I was about to have one. I began chemotherapy treatment immediately, and a few weeks later, packed a suitcase and checked into The Princess Margaret Hospital. I was very frightened.

In the lobby of the hospital there was grand piano. Late at night I would sneak down to the piano and play. Music, as always, was helping me deal with a difficult situation. I knew that in a few days i would be going into "isolation". In a bone marrow transplant, the patient is required to be in strict isolation for at least a month. The reason being that my immune system would be destroyed by the chemotherapy drugs. And so, the day came when i was moved to the H WING of the hospital, and given my own air filtered, isolation room. Have you ever seen the movie Papillion? Well it wasn'tquite like that. I hung up a few pictures. I brought my guitar in with me as well. The days went on as the chemotherapy drugs kicked in and did their nasty work. The pain was unreal. I was given morphine around the clock to help combat the pain. I was in the room for a month, fighting for my life.

It was in this environment that I began writing new songs. I was trying to write things down everyday. i knew that if I was ever lucky enough to be looking back at this experience, it would be good to have the immediate thoughts, thoughts that might fade away afterI left the room. Perhaps I would never want to revisit those moments anyway. It was also just the best way to pass the time, to play guitar and try to find some humour in the situation. In August , i was back at home, trying to rebuild my strength. Once a day, i had to walk to the corner and back. A major task at the time.On a good day, i could make it around the block.

It was on one of these walks that i ran into Chris Gartner. We had played in The Look People together for a few years. We had a cup of tea and i told him about the songs I had written. He came by to hear the songs and encouraged me to record them.

My friends in the group The Rheostatics invited me to perform, opening for them. It would be good for my spirits. It felt like i was reclaiming my life. The band got together to rehearse, and it just clicked. The songs really came to life. Playing them live made me want to get into the studio and record right away. The band were all friends .We had all played together before in one form or another. Bob Scott, Derek Orford, Chris Gartner and Martin Tielli. Chris introduced me to a fellow named Jeremy Darby who had a studio in toronto's east end, and who had worked with many legendary musicians. I hit it off with Jeremy. He says that my skin was green when I met him.

Once he had heard the songs he took the project into his hands and really made it all happen. The great Michael Phillip Wojewoda also came on board to help with production and mixing. I had my good days and my bad days, but for the most part, we had a good time making this record. It was a group effort. Derek and Chris were there every day, from start to finish. Once mixing was finished, Jeremy and i flew to New York to master the cd, and then i began working on the artwork which ended up taking the better part of a year.

I decided to call the cd "H WING". Most of the songs were written there so it made sense.I see the cd as a testament to the strength of the human spirit, transcending desparate situations and dealing with one's own mortality. The songs are filled with hope, fear, love, confusion, gratitude, sadness, and perhaps most importantly, a sense of humour. I wanted the album to have an overall feeling of hope rather than despair.

The album is a memento from a terrible time in my life. I am very glad it exists as a reminder to me and as a piece of work. I am happy that I still exist as well, so that I can share it with you. Hope you like it.
cheers,
Kevin Hearn
